Rhiwbina Flood Defence Scheme

What is the Rhiwbina Flood Defence Scheme?
The Rhiwbina Flood Defence Scheme is a project that will greatly improve local resilience to the type of flood events that have afflicted this popular area of Cardiff in recent years. It is a key part of the Council's vision to improve the quality of residents' local environment and this scheme will deliver significant improvements to the Rhiwbina area.

Why do we need a flood defence scheme?
In 2009, homes in Rhiwbina were hit by floods after the streams running through the area burst their banks. In response to this significant event, Cardiff Council is promoting a capital scheme to reduce the flooding that has hit the area ten times in the last 20 years.

Will this put an end to flooding in the area?
This is a flood defence scheme so although it will greatly reduce the risk of flooding, we can not guarantee that it will stop flooding altogether during the extreme weather events.

When will work begin?
Consultant Engineers and specialist Ecologists have been in the area from October 2012 carrying out preparatory survey works. Construction work is expected to start in the summer of 2013 with completion due by the end of the year. Rhiwbina residents and the general public will have the opportunity to view an exhibition of designs at convenient locations early in the new year.

How is the scheme funded?
The scheme is being funded by the European Regional Development Fund, Welsh Government and Cardiff Council.

  1. 1.Let's hope that when the banks of the existing stream are widened that proper attention is given to protect the new sloping sides otherwise any flood water s will carve out a greater width from the remaining land.
    2. Re; the self closing gates/doors they are showing to be provided at the entrances to the properties on the south side of Pen Y Dre. Can someone please tell me how they expect to open and close these gates across the footpath entrances without leaving a gap under the gate. There is a gradient at these acceses from Pen y Dre acros the bridges and up the pathway to the properties.Withouta gap under the gates they cannot be opened across the slope. Whwen I raised this with the Engineer on duty at the exhibition he said that this matter had not been designed yet! They will need some magic potion unless Mary or Alan are going to come along after the gates are closed and fill the gaps with sand bags.Fortunately the actual buildings here will not be affected but their front gardens will.In an emergency whilst anyhe flooding is taking place and the gates/doors are closed these residents will have to go along the pathways in front of the buildings and get out alonside the aromatherapy clinic. There still seems to be a lot of extra design work required to bring the total scheme to fruition.
